For a city that that is known for its “chai” tapris, we seemed to have switched sides and taken to coffee in a big way. We have café’s that have opened all around serving different types of coffee, making us coffee connoisseurs while we decide our favourite form of caffeine. It hasn’t taken much time for us to pick up trends around the world and fill it in our cup, trying and testing what suits our palette.
In all honesty, I’ve always preferred a cup of coffee to tea. What began with Nescafe, grew into more matured preferences with time. I have a weakness for cold coffee (minus the ice-cream) so when I discovered cold brew coffee, I was more than happy to give this drink a shot.
The science behind cold brewed coffee isn’t too difficult to understand. It is basically coffee that has been brewed in cold water or room temperature over a period between 12 to 24 hours. Here, time replaces heat when it comes to brewing to coarsely ground beans that extract the delicious flavour compounds and some of the caffeine from the beans, leaving behind undesirable fatty acids and myriad bitter oils that are induced when exposed to high temperatures. This makes the brew smoother and less acidic than a heated brewing process, giving you a more balanced and distinctively smoother cup; served iced cold or steaming hot.

Koinonia Coffee roasters focus on different types of Indian coffee. They roast and brew their own beans, concentrating on different flavour profiles for different roasts. The cold brew here is woodier in its tones and is cutely served in a small whiskey tumbler on the rocks. There’s more smokiness to this brew and it cuts the acidity with ease.

Coffee by Di Bella uses Australia’s premium quality beans to derive their cold brew. The coffee here is mainly a medium roast and the brew is extremely refreshing.
You can walk into any outlet across the city to have your fill.
Blue Tokai’s blend is a medium roast with a heavy body. The acidity levels are very low and it has a bittersweet finish. You can choose your flavour profile for a variety of nutty, cocoa and dark chocolate.
The cold brew at Roasted Today has got a well-rounded, mellow flavour with heavy caffeine content. The brew has a strong cacoa finish with hints of vanilla so it leaves a smooth finish on the tongue cutting out any hints of acidity.
This place was one of the first few to introduce the cold brew concept to Mumbai. They use the old Yama cold brew apparatus and single origin Ethiopian beans with fresh batches made every day.

Café Zoe has interesting twists on the classic cold brew. There serve a cold brew tonic, a cold brew malt, a cold brew con leche which is mixed with milk and a cold brew affogato which is a sinful indulgence of vanilla ice cream, biscotti, chocolate chips and the cold brew.
The cold brew at The Pantry is one of the least bitter and acidic cups of coffee we have tried. You can easily pass on the sugar and indulge in their cup and not regret it. They soak their beans in room temperature water for over 12 hours and the coffee has a subtle sweetness to it.
This coffee can be brewed at home and it has a brew kit with six brew packs which can make up to 18 cups. The brew packs are even reusable. It is great for someone who doesn’t want to step outside and would love to prepare their own coffee at home.
