Inside Garage Inc. Public House, Colaba | All The Deets
Taking us back to an era long gone is the latest addition to Colaba’s many tourist attractions – Garage Inc. Public House. We say tourist attraction because the eatery and pub is tucked into a Colaba Causeway by lane, harboured under an elegant property that is now transformed into a backpacker’s hostel.
When we first stepped into their space, we expected pristine surroundings with garage-like decor, but were pleasantly surprised by the rugged yet vintage interiors with comfy wooden furniture, checkered chairs, a stylish bar, peppy music and a lengthy menu that offers crowd favourites from every cuisine imaginable.
Earlier this space housed the popular restaurant Palkhi. So, when we met Anisha Maker, owner and chef of Garage Inc., she told us that they chose to keep the curved ceiling and wooden flooring that Palkhi had, to maintain that SoBo charm.
Garage Inc. hails from Delhi, where their outlet has been around for almost six years now. We were in a fix when we saw the many interesting fusion dishes and wanted to try out almost everything, so we let Anisha take the lead and order her favourites for us.
Shakshuka was first on the list, a yummy Mediterranean breakfast dish that was served with toast. The consistency of the poached egg was just right, and went really well with the base vegetable and tomato sauce. The Vietnamese Iced Coffee, we thought, was a good accompaniment to wash that down, but it was a tad too sweet for my liking.
Next up were the Reggae Reggae Nachos; we loved every bite of the crisps that were topped with beans, salsa and melted cheese. Not every restaurant gets this classic Mexican appetizer right, but Garage Inc. definitely did. We saw a number of Asian options on the menu and called for the Chilli Chicken Bao next, but the spicy clearly overpowered the tasty in this dish.
Berry Straw, one of their signature cocktails, came to our rescue with strawberry flavoured ice cubes and white rum that was refreshing and pleasantly potent. The Watermelon & Feta Salad from the Greek cuisine was next and turned out to be our favourite thing on the menu. The melon scoops, arugula and feta were covered in a sour and mint-spiked dressing, a zest that could easily bring tears to a salad-lovers eyes.
We traversed back to the savouries with Italian Meatballs in Marinara Sauce. The meatballs impressed our taste buds with their tender texture coupled with generous amounts of parmesan and spicy marinara. We then had the Spare Ribs that were basted in a tangy sesame dressing, a fine choice for those who love their pork sweet and spicy.
Next, we tried another signature cocktail that caught our attention on their extensive drinks menu – Moondust. A tequila based concoction, this had activated charcoal and edible silver dust. Yes, you read that right! Actual silver dust. Its blueberry flavoured sweetness went well with the alcohol in it and we surely preferred it over the cocktail we consumed earlier.
Keeping the North Indian roots of the outlet in mind, we went for Tandoori Pomfret Kebab, a delectable fish kebab rubbed in spicy tandoori masala, served with green chutney and lime. It’s a safe dish that though didn’t blow our mind, was well prepared.
Garage Inc. is popular for its burgers in the capital so we could not step out of here without trying their very best. The OMG Burger had us overwhelmed with its mere description so we braced ourselves for this humongous finisher and it didn’t disappoint. Layered between two generous loaves were tomato slices, an inch-fat juicy chicken patty, Mexican meat chilli, nachos, cheese, egg and onion rings; oh, and they served this with fries of course. If you have a big appetite and crave the perfect American burger, this is definitely for you. Warning: The OMG isn’t for the faint hearted.
Anisha told us that their motive was to revive Colaba’s historic party vibe but we’d say they’ll surely manage to do more than just that. Garage Inc. has a delectable spread, perfect ambience and good music that will pull in not just foreigners but locals alike for the food and nightlife.
We’re going back for more burgers and to try out their unconventional Makhani Fondue, and we recommend you do too.
