A Relaxing Weekend Stay At JW Marriott Hotel Pune | MF Travels
Often, when we travel we want to see everything, hopping from city to city, sight to sight. However, over time, I’ve discovered that a getaway makes more sense when we take our time to soak in the environment and focus on personally cleansing the stress away while fully experiencing a destination. And this notion recently helped me open my eyes to the undeniable benefits of slow travel when I decided to take a spa-cation at JW Marriott Hotel Pune.
The property is the first JW Marriott in the city and the 3rd in the country after the JW Mumbai and the JW Chandigarh. It took me about three and half hours to reach this hotel from Mumbai, which is nestled in the heart of the city at Senapati Bapat Road. As I approached the hotel, I was greeted by the hotel’s understated luxury which came across in its design sensibilities which were luxurious but minimalist.
I checked in to my Deluxe Room and felt immediately at home amongst the muted décor and deep serenity. I could feel the fractious clamour of my frayed nerves fade away as I settled against the many comfy pillows. An Indian dessert welcome platter was immediately sent to my room. Of piping hot Gulab Jamun, Rabdi, Ras Malai and some fresh fruits, I devoured this treat without a grain of guilt.
I was told that upgraded rooms at the hotel have access to a private lounge serving free breakfast, drinks and snacks. The property houses five restaurants, including a rooftop eatery, a deli, an Italian restaurant serving wood-fired pizzas, along with a night club and a refined bar. While choosing from these was quite a task, I chose to revel in an exquisite and appetizing spread of barbecued meat and vegetables from the authentic rustic smoke house menu at Alto Vino, the high-end restaurant which serves Italian favourites.
During my meal here, I noticed that a splendid variety of techniques from char-grilled, smoked, oven roasted to slow roasted were executed by Chef Christian Huber who celebrates the Indian palate the Italian way. Noshing on the delightful Bruschetta di Pomodori, Provolone (Heirloom Tomato Bruschetta with Provolone Cheese) and the fresh Ricotta Spinachi Pizza, I was convinced that I had finally been able to spot authentic Italian food which was simple and more important wasn’t Indian-ized to merely please palates.
The expert team of mixologists also presented an exhilarating selection of smoky cocktails with astounding presentations. The thoughtfully crafted cocktails like the Smokey Boulevardier and Smoked Herb Gin and Tonic went perfectly with the meal, not over-powering your palate but highlighting the subtle flavours.
Considering this was a spa-cation, most of my time was spent at the extravagant Quan Spa. A swig of herbal tea, a few minutes in the steam room, a foot-soak, a couple deep inhalations of an aromatic essential oil blend and I was relaxed even before my massaged started. My polite therapist Kanan, massaged the aromatic oil with gentle yet firm strokes. The 90-minute long spa session felt so relaxing that I couldn’t understand why I didn’t do this more often.
When I wasn’t at the spa, I would spend my time at the hotel’s popular Food Truck. Here I would recommend you try munchies like the signature Zingy Pesto Burger, Mushroom Loaded Fries, Quesadilla Rustica and Chicken Chettinad.
Mornings found me up early and drawing open the curtains to the pretty façade of Pune. The shower (an uncomplicated affair, thank goodness!) was refreshing, and readied me for the buffet spread at Spice Kitchen, at the lobby level. Here I had a hearty breakfast as I relished Chef Ranjan’s Mexican Omelette sent across especially for me. The dish was healthy yet full of flavour.
The final touch of my spa-cation was the Blue Amber Radiance Facial at the Quan Spa. It leveraged Gemology, the famous French brand based in Paris which uses the power of gemstones to deliver natural goodness to the skin. To my relief, the goodness of Blue Amber left me glowing inside out. The intuitiveness of my therapists coupled with the tingling aromas and silken robes ensured that this was no ordinary spa-cation.
I have to say that the hotel shines both in the food and spa department. Clearly, good food, attentive service and the comfort of each guest (be it a business traveller or a family) are intrinsic to the cavalcade of features that are distinctive of the Marriott experience. Primped in and out; indeed this is what they call bliss.
