Inside Kale And Kaffe, Andheri, Lokhandwala | All The Deets
With fitness being a major trend in our city, the number of healthy cafes popping up doesn’t come as a surprise. Kale and Kaffe, in Andheri, Lokhandwala is the newest entrant in this space and features fresh salads, juices, wraps and guilt-free desserts. Located in Laxmi Industrial Estate, the cute café is a nice pit stop for shoppers as well as the health-conscious.
The café has large, French windows that allow natural light to stream in with deep blue walls and mirrors that add a sense of freshness to the already vibrant menu. There is an open salad bar which allows you to create your own salads if you the menu doesn’t entice you enough.
My companion and I decided to leave it to the experts and order salads from the menu. While sipping on an extremely refreshing juice that consisted of honey, lemon and mint called The Hangover Cure, we started off with the Watermelon and Feta Salad. Sweet cubes of watermelon along with crumbled feta and arugula leaves and mint were the perfect way to start our meal. I liked that the salad was light and the drizzle of balsamic vinegar was not too over powering. I then sampled the Kale Caesar Salad which featured a generous portion of grilled chicken strips along with iceberg lettuce and kale, parmesan cheese and croutons dressed in a low-fat Caesar dressing. I am generally a fan of Caesar Salads so although this one didn’t blow my mind, I would definitely order it again.
For anyone who is looking to eat something that is on the heavier side, the Summery Basil Pasta Salad is a dish I would recommend. This pasta dish was tossed in an in-house pesto sauce along with cherry tomatoes that added a lovely tang to the penne. The crunch of red onions made it an interesting mix of texture and I enjoyed the oregano and basil dressing. I also liked the Mexican Chipotle Bowl which was really filling and fresh. It featured black beans, avocado and sweet corn mixed with greens, cilantro and yellow cheddar cheese; this salad was an interesting and tasty take on the flavours of Mexico. The Thai Som Tam was slightly spicy, however enjoyable. I would have preferred this salad as an accompaniment to one of the sandwiches instead of having it on its own. The thinness of the raw papaya slices made it too light and I felt that the salad didn’t pack the punch it usually does.
My favourite part of the menu was the toasties. The Avo Toastie was a crisp whole wheat toast topped with a creamy avocado mash broken with some spice fromthe jalapenos and bell peppers. I found the balsamic dressing to be slightly bitter though. I loved the Paprika Mushroom and Truffle Oil Toastie. It was extremely delicious and was lovely to munch on. I could imagine myself stopping by here with a friend just to have these along with some coffee. Unfortunately, the Tikka+ Pesto Sandwich was too dry for my liking and although the chicken tikka pieces in the sandwich were generous, the iceberg lettuce and buffalo mozzarella could have used some more pesto to hydrate the bread. The Healthy Shawarma Wrap was a lighter version of what we are used to here in Mumbai. There wasn’t much of a compromise on taste in the healthier version and I was quite happy with it.
The best part of this café was that the menu was not just restricted to salads and juices. There was a whole range of gluten free desserts to choose from. It was easy to indulge without feeling the guilt and the Gluten Free Goeey Chocolate Cake was a perfect end to this afternoon. Absolutely warm, delicious and gooey, it didn’t seem like we were making any compromise on taste!
I enjoyed my salad encounter at Kale and Kaffe. What stood out for me was that everything that was served to us was fresh and tasty. There were no wilted leaves and the dressings were all made in house which is important when you are looking at eating healthier. The sophisticated interiors make this restaurant perfect for lazy lunches or even a casual dinner. Do drop by and let us know what you think!
