Inside Green Mama Café, Juhu | All The Deets
It was one of those slow, lazy weekdays where I couldn’t wait for the weekend, when I decided to visit Green Mama Café in Juhu for a quick lunch to try to change my mood. Thankfully, as soon as I entered, the pretty pink grills with pockets of green immediately lifted my spirit. The café gave out an endearing warm vibe with the yellow lights, wooden tables and stone flooring. I felt like I was in luck and my small hope for a mid-week brightness was about to be fulfilled.
Once seated, my colleague and I ran through the menu. We had a smiling, ready to help waiter who walked us through the menu, and suggested that we started off with something to drink. Within a few minutes, I had a tall, refreshing glass of the Detox Juice, which consisted of kale, apple, watermelon, celery and pineapple. I thoroughly enjoyed this glass because not only was it fresh, but it wasn’t too sweet and had a lovely spice to it thanks to the celery.
Our waiter informed us that café focuses on trying to maintain a high health quotient and recommended that we try one of the bowls. We decided to go with his recommendation of the Burrito Bowl. It consisted of brown rice with well-seasoned black beans, corn and grilled onions. The sour cream and salsa, once mixed with the rice and black beans made a great dressing that was both tangy, yet creamy, satisfying my craving for spice and flavour.
We then decided to try the sandwiches. I was interested in the Avocado Hummus, Sautéed Mushrooms and Cherry Tomatoes on Sourdough since I’ve been loving all things avocado these days. However, I was slightly disappointed. The mushrooms lacked any depth of flavour and the avocado was not seasoned at all. I would have liked a dash of pepper to elevate the flavour of this dish. However, you cannot stop munching on the sweet potato chips that accompany this dish!
I did however, like the Chicken Fajita Sandwich. The guacamole was used as a sandwich spread that made it devoid of any dryness and the jalapenos gave the grilled chicken a pungent kick. Grilled peppers made it spicy and with a lovely crunch that added different layers of texture. I would definitely order this wholesome sandwich again on my lunch break.
Both my companion and I quickly sifted through the menu again and we both agreed that we needed to try the Greek Style Prawns with Feta, Dill and Tomatoes. Unfortunately, we both felt the prawns could be juicier and I found the sauce to be quite bland. The feta was a meagre drizzle and there was hardly any sharpness of the dill that should have through the sauce. Overall, I was pretty disappointed with this dish.
To make up for this though, came the Peanut Butter and Berry Compote Waffle. Drenched in peanut butter with generous dollops of berry compote, the waffle was warm with a crispy exterior. They hit the right balance of sweet and salty and made it an ideal dessert for someone like me, who doesn’t like an overdose of sugar. I didn’t find it too difficult to wipe the plate clean and ended my lunch with a large smile.
Green Mama Café is a sweet stop that I would recommend to anyone who is looking for a wholesome yet healthy lunch stop. There are a couple of hits and misses, but if you inform the staff of what you are looking for, you will be well taken care of. The interiors make it amicable for a date or a lunch with the girls and the menu provides a number of interesting options for varying taste buds.
